Artist Statement:

This body of work created is centered on the exploration of the illusion with a twist of realism. The inspiration for the pictorial outcomes are dedicated to the strange altered states of memory, which are caused by old events that mix together as well as childhood fantasies, imagination and tales. The paintings are a representation of the effect that the past has had upon one and how in the present emotions and visions are a direct consequence of those. Highlighting the things we would rather neutralize or do not want to remember at all; causing haziness and obscurity.

The majority of the paintings take inspiration from a variety of literary sources ranging from books, stories, and biographies as well as deep thoughts and sayings that I have collected through the years. Using these as a base to work from and translating them on canvas creates a visual depiction, a solid painting with my approach. Thus enabling me to express visually these sources in a more rounded way, highlighting their poetic nature that is what drew me to them in the first place. It is a way to distant myself from the emotional subject but at the same time be compassioned towards the subject matter.

A strong characteristic of my work that appears within the body language is the different forms of physical contact. Touch has an extremely powerful value as it is the very first sense to develop providing love and safety to a newborn. It can be stronger even from emotional contact and it is necessary as it can affect the mind-set of any being.

The figures on the paintings are mostly ‘alone’ with not another someone, creating a strange confusing atmosphere. The physical contact is between the personas and an object; for instance, the hand laying on the pillow and mattress or even the ambiguous painting, where the arm blends in with its own skin – creating the sense of an irony.

Within the exploration of female figures and hand portraiture, I would like to refer to the floral designs as well as to some other natural elements that might appear on my artwork such as water. I connect nature entities, floral or anything that is life-form- mostly referring to water sources, to the flow of life, completion and rebirth. They are symbols of health, recovery and protection from the bad.

When I create a new art piece, I do not only focus on the technical part; it also involves spiritual and deeply emotional dimensions. I try to bring to the viewer the feeling of beauty and sense and whenever looking at my artwork to create new emotions and interpretations.
